Spectrum Carnival Troupe show their appreciation of Philip Duncan aka ‘the Boss’ with an afternoon of Carnival Arts and Dance.
Spectrum Carnival Troupe was started by Philip over ten years ago and was his great joy and passion in life. He encouraged participation in Preston Caribbean Carnival and many other carnivals throughout the north of England, leading his troupe with dedication, commitment and an impish sense of fun.
Sadly, in recent years Philips health has made it impossible for him to continue in his role as Spectrum’s Troupe Leader. His legacy to the troupe has been carried forward by Lisa Hopkins with help from other Spectrum committee members, Shirley, Rhianne and Kirsty. The troupe is going from strength to strength with Philip as their guiding light.
This May the troupe gave Philip and the other residents of Banksfield House an afternoon filled with the fun, colour and music that Philip loves so much. It was a Carnival in miniature on a hot sunny Sunday afternoon.
The Troupe members have been practising their dance routines to perfection and they delighted Philip with their skills and enthusiasm. He joined them and Carnival Costume artist, Nadine Knight in dancing to the infectious tunes the troupe will be sharing at Preston Caribbean Carnival on 25th June 2017.
Don’t miss it – if the ‘Boss Man’ can be there he’ll be dancing with his troupe as always!

Meet the artists who will be in residence at the Harris during September, enjoy chai tea and Thali food, music, creativity, colours and fabrics!
Free – just drop in!
Come along to a jolly launch party to welcome two Indian Artists from Ahmedabad, into England! They are both going to be on an artists residency for three weeks at the Harris then three weeks at Platt Hall, Manchester. Please feel free to circulate this to anyone that you might think would be interested, the more the merrier! It is aimed at all ages and includes – participants, visitors, colleagues, friends, family, neighbours etc!
The two artists, Lokesh Ghai and Shamji Vishram – textile artist and weaver respectively – will be offering an activity and events programme during the weeks of the 10th September and the 28th September – mainly delivering workshops Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. I have been targeting the community to offer them the opportunity of working with the artists in a creative workshop (on or off site) and to date, have a couple of dates that I am keeping as “neutral” drop in workshops for anyone that I haven’t targeted yet to attend – including staff/individuals not belonging to a group. These two dates are: Thursday 20th Sept 1.30 – 4.45pm and Saturday 22nd Sept 10.00am – 12.30noon. A workshop could be based on trying Indian garments and textiles on; a discussion and short film workshop or a making workshop (weaving and block printing). The Artists:
SLOkesh Ghaihamji Vishram – weaver, and LOkesh Ghai – textile artist (pictured), both work in Gujarat, India, and will be at the Harris Museum & Art Gallery for a limited period of three weeks, from 10-28 Sept. to bring The Cotton Exchange project alive.
The artists will present their own work, plus new work by other Indian artists and artisans working in the cotton textiles and fashion industry.
A “pop up” studio will be in the Harris Café, featuring creative discussions, practical workshops and social events. (look out for details on the Harris website nearer the time)
The Cotton Exchange project:
The Cotton Exchange is part of a series of international exchange visits between England and India – specifically Lancashire, Manchester and Ahmedabad in Gujurat.
A team of young people and staff from five North West museums and art galleries, including the Harris Museum & Art Gallery, have been working together since their recent visit to Gujarat this year.
