Content for the next copy of the news sheet

We’re looking for articles and pictures for our next News Sheet.
Thanks to everyone who has already sent contributions, it will be out in a week or two.

The revised deadline for this issue is Sunday 5th May. If you can’t get your copy to us by then send it anyway and it will go in the next issue.

Why not write about your interests – someone in the community will surely be interested too! it doesn’t have to be an essay, a couple of hundred words would be great and a picture is worth a thousand words! You can send phone pics to 07772504644

How about a recipe or a joke?
Is there someone you know who has an achievement that deserves celebration?
What about news from your Island?
Are you a writer? Poetry or prose gratefully accepted.
Do you have an event you would like to publicise?
Can you send us a ‘Prayer for the Day’?
What’s coming up? Anniversaries/Fashion/Entertainment?
Announcements? Birthdays/weddings/etc

And don’t forget, we have a competition for a title for the news sheet, £10.00 shopping voucher for the winning suggestion. We have a few suggestions already, why not add yours – you might be lucky! We need a name that reflects our African and our Caribbean heritages and our base in the Preston area.

Preston Caribbean Carnival Committee and Preston Black History Group are looking for photos from Preston Carnival through the years . . . especially pre 2006. Next year is the 40th anniversary and it would be great to have pictures from the early years. Do you have any photos that we could scan and use in next years celebrations? We’ll be having a scanning sessions at Jalgos on Tuesday 21st May at the Lunch Club and we’ll organise more scanning sessions after this years Carnival so that we can preserve these precious memories. Let us know if you have photos to share.

Hope to hear from you – get your name in the paper!

Come along to a jolly launch party to welcome two Indian Artists from Ahmedabad, into England! They are both going to be on an artists residency for three weeks at the Harris then three weeks at Platt Hall, Manchester. Please feel free to circulate this to anyone that you might think would be interested, the more the merrier! It is aimed at all ages and includes – participants, visitors, colleagues, friends, family, neighbours etc!

The two artists, Lokesh Ghai and Shamji Vishram – textile artist and weaver respectively – will be offering an activity and events programme during the weeks of the 10th September and the 28th September – mainly delivering workshops Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. I have been targeting the community to offer them the opportunity of working with the artists in a creative workshop (on or off site) and to date, have a couple of dates that I am keeping as “neutral” drop in workshops for anyone that I haven’t targeted yet to attend – including staff/individuals not belonging to a group. These two dates are: Thursday 20th Sept 1.30 – 4.45pm and Saturday 22nd Sept 10.00am – 12.30noon. A workshop could be based on trying Indian garments and textiles on; a discussion and short film workshop or a making workshop (weaving and block printing). The Cotton Exchange project:
The Cotton Exchange is part of a series of international exchange visits between England and India – specifically Lancashire, Manchester and Ahmedabad in Gujurat.

A team of young people and staff from five North West museums and art galleries, including the Harris Museum & Art Gallery, have been working together since their recent visit to Gujarat this year.
